Freshwater Fishing in Pee Dee Area

Fishing Weather Finally Here

Itís Here!

Folks, Iím happy to say that itís finally hereóthe weather weíve all been waiting for! We may yet have another cold snap or two before full-blown springtime sets in, but I feel confident saying that the worst of the weather is behind us, and that fishing weather is here to stay. As Iím sure many of you will agree, itís about time.

I plan to get into the Lynches River soon, and the Little Pee Dee beckons me often. Iíll be sure to make it there before it gets too hot. My ultimate fishing trip goal for this year is to take my boat to the U.S. 1 boat landing on the Wateree River and fish on down to the 378 bridge, camping at least one night. Whoís with me? What are your fishing plans for this spring?

Lake Wateree has been a hotbed of activity for bass and crappie anglers over the past couple of weeks. Bass tournaments from several different organizations have taken place out of Clearwater Cove with more to come from the Carolina Anglers Team Trail, the American Bass Anglers Tournament Trail, and the Shaw Bassers Association.

Hereís the latest fishing report, from a conglomerate of the SCDNR, local guides, and local bait storesÖ
Lake Wateree
Striped Bass: Good, especially while using topwater lures, and live shiners or herring in the lower part of the lake.

Largemouth Bass: Good to very good. Shallow boat docks on main lake points are producing fish on spinnerbait and rattletraps, especially in firetiger color or silver with traces of blue. Fish water with the higher water temperatures, which is usually the stained water in the mid-lake.

Crappie: Good. There is still some muddy water from recent rains which have made the crappie fishing less than ideal in certain portions of the lake, but the Fishing Creek and Beaver Creek areas really heated up this past week, with minnows as bait fished near shallow structure. Jigs in tiger-fire color have also been producing.

Catfish: Catfishing continues to be very good. Big blue cats are being caught on cut bait in the deeper holes of the lake.

Lynches River:
The Lynches River has risen recently with the rains the region has had. This is making some loading ramps usable, but continue to use caution when using these ramps.

Bass: Slow to fair. The warmer weather is sure to turn them on so look for things to heat up soon. Plastic worms and grubs are leading to some success. Crankbaits are also good bets.

Bream: Slow to fair. The warm weather will have bream fishing improving to very good soon enough, perhaps towards the end of this week. Worms on the bottom have produced a few decent fish.

Pee Dee River System:

Recent rains have caused river levels to rise and has caused some more of the oxbows to flood. Fish these oxbows for bass and panfish but stick to the main river for catfish.

Catfish: Good to very good. Cut bait is catching some good catfish in the main river. Fish on the bottom in the deeper holes and around channel breaks.

Crappie: Fair, with improved catches being reported using minnows in oxbow lakes.

Bass: Fair, fishing the oxbows with plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crawdad-colored crankbaits.

Bream: Fair, with some fish being caught on crickets and wigglers in the oxbows around rip-rap and close to sandy banks.

Now, check out the angler below showing off a couple of chunks taken in a recent bass fishing tournament out of Clearwater Cove at Lake WatereeÖ
