After a bit of a slow start to the 2014 turkey season (both in terms of gobbling activity and encounters), the tables turned for me on Sunday morning. I was trying a new spot at a hunt club I recently joined on Saturday and had located a big bird strutting with a hen in the middle of a soon to be planted corn field the day before. Unfortunately, I didn't locate him until 8:30 am that day and he.... Read More
This is my fouth year hunting turkey's and for the fourth year I am having the same problem. I spend a lot of time in the woods on public land near Winnsboro. After deer season is over I squirrel hunt this area. I've got the winter pattern for turkeys pretty much pinned down. Opening day I was in the middle of five gobblers within 1/4 mile. Missed the closest one as he took to a hen right.... Read More
After 3 years of turkey hunting I FINALLY got one. I gave up on turkey hunting on March the 2nd only to resume on March the 3rd. Good thing I did. He was a young one....about 1.5 years old. Shot in Early Branch, SC.
The SCDNR holds lotteries each year for turkey hunts on land that is intensively managed for quality wildlife. The demand for these hunts outweighs the opportunities, so hunters enter a lottery, or drawing, and hope to get picked for these great hunting trips.
Hunters can now apply for these hunts online, as well as through the mail or in person at one of the four regional SCDNR.... Read More
HOOT HOOT HOOT ~ Gobbler season is just around the corner. Get out your turkey calls and knock the dust off of your turkey vest. SHAKE IT GOOD FIRST and get the spiders out of it. Wipe off your slate calls and get a fresh batch of diaphragm calls wet. It's just around the corner and if you don't start now you will be RUSTY when opening day swings around the corner.
My buddy (Chris Petty) and I (Justen Evans) killed these 3 Toms April 15ths. Chris shot one and I shot the other two. With this hunt we both tagged out! The excitement of this hunt was unreal! We had the 3 gobblers come in after some hens started the fight purr and it was a show from there! Lucky once Chris and I shot together to kill two, the third stuck around the hen and had to smoke him!.... Read More
After harvesting three turkeys with his granddad earlier this season, Kyle McCutchen of Bishopville doubled with his dad last Friday in Lee County, marking the third time in as many seasons that the father/son team has doubled up.
Last Thursday evening, McCutchen was hunting alone and had two longbeards come in to his decoys. He decided to hold off on shooting them, and to bring his dad.... Read More
I was able to get video footage of an awesome turkey hunt! The field was full of birds to include 9 Toms. I had 3 Toms hang-up just out of range and after about a 10 min. stand-off they finally commit and come in nicely!
Bishopville's Kyle McCutchen is an avid turkey hunter, but what he loves most about the sport is calling turkeys in for other hunters. Most of the turkeys he has harvested have been while more than one gobbler shows up while he's calling for a friend or family member that he wants to double up with. He has doubled with his dad on several occasions, but never with his granddad, who had yet to.... Read More
I have found that the best way to research all of the new cutting and controlled burning in the Francis Marion National Forest is via a view from above. In a few short hours I can review all of the forest from a much better vantage point. It helps to find some of the new fields and cutdowns that pop up here and there. These openings help me to hone in on the gobblers that I am after!
April 6, 2013- First turkey with a bow. It was looking to be a slow morning when this Tom gobbled about 50 yards behind us. He came in to our left at full strut. We were afraid he might hang up or bust us, but curiosity killed the cat. Or in this case the turkey. PSE and Rage broad heads took care of the rest. About an 8 yard shot. I apologize in advance for a couple of words used in the.... Read More
