Edisto Gov. Cup - Day One
Nearly all of the 30-boat fleet elected to fish in the calm conditions on Thursday for the 22nd Annual Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament. Stifling hot weather inshore did not affect the offshore bite though as 26 sailfish were released on Thursday, in what is the fifth and final leg of the S.C. Governor's Cup Billfishing Series. Rascal, owned by Norman Pulliam, is in the tournament lead with 4 sailfish released, good for 800 points. Game On is in second place with four sailfish releases, since they reached the 800-point total after Rascal. Lil 'Bit is a 50-foot Post owned and captained by Pete Loy of Mount Pleasant - and they sit in third place with the release of a blue marlin on Thursday, good for 600 points. This was the only blue marlin release on day one and Loy said, 'The blue marlin came to the dredge and mate Coy Myers spotted him before he ate a Black Bart RPP lure on the right short line, and angler Tim Smith handled the rest.' A solid weigh-in included these meatfish cat

Lake Keowee - Cat
Amazing story..... Caught this 27', 9 pound flat head cat on Lake Keowee on July 10, 2010.

The amazing part of the story is..... It was caught with a minowe, using an ultra light pole with only 4 pound test line.

He didn't fight too much! :)

Bull Redfish
I caught this big bull redfish at the Charleston jetties. It was 50' inches long and made a good release. Caught him on live menhaden. Brought in several more but this was the largest and the largest I have ever caught.

Santee Summer Bass Fishing
It sure is hot! We have had some days where the heat index is over 100, and that can make for a great farmers tan. The fishing however, though not as easy as spring time conditions has still been good. We have been catching good numbers from the upper reaches of Lake Marion up into the river. 20+ fish a day have been caught and that should hold right on into fall. Some bigger fish from 4 - 7 lbs are mixed in but most are sizably smaller.

Baits of choice have been Fish Stalker's 4' Craw Worm rigged Bungi style (see video on there website)-- Green Pumpkin Texas Red, June Bug, and Plain ole Green Pumpkin have been the consistent colors.

We are also still catching some fish on the trees with wacky rigged Fish Stalker Trick Sticks and Finesse worms in the same colors.

For that early morning (and I mean early!) bite,, we have stuck a few big fish with the SPRO KING DADDY Frog. This is a big bait and getting 1 bite a morning is good,, but hold on if you hook one up!

Broad River Catfish
Catfish on the Broad River is pretty good right now. Take a couple cans of night crawlers and a bag full of pool noodles. Sonny's and Doc's dip bait seems to work the best. One thing I have learned is that you have to play around with the size of pool noodle you use. Bigger noodles will catch big catfish, but if you want to catch a bunch of catfish you need some very small pieces on a couple of your rods. Some times we use pieces up to 3 inches, but sometimes a 1-1/2 inches is the right size. Try yellow, red, and blue noodles and see which one they are biting the best that day. Always take some night crawlers to keep you busy while you are waiting for the bigger catfish.

42' Redfish-from a Kayak
Lowcountry fishing was tough this past weekend. The baitfish were plentiful but the bite was slow in Johnson Creek and Machete Flats. It wasn't easy to keep the toadfish, skates, and small sharks off the bait, but kayak angler Dalton Reames of Sumter caught the fish of a lifetime. Reames landed a 42-inch redfish while trolling a mud minnow through Johnson Creek, making what started out as a slow day into a memorable one.

The 3.5 foot long redfish made several runs, pulling line out each time it came within sight of the kayak. Reames played it cool, allowing his Ambassadeur 6500's drag to do its job while he let the drum play itself out. After pulling the kayak around for a few minutes, the fish finally tired and Reames was able to haul it atop his 12' Wilderness Systems Tarpon. Reames then spent several minutes in the water reviving the fish, which finally swam off under its own power, none the worse for the battle.

Hot Santee Bassin!
Some nice bass were caught this past weekend out of Packs Landing located on the upper part of Lake Marion. Brett Mitchell & Jerry Montjoy brought in a bag just shy of 20 lbs and that was only 4 bass! They had two over 7 lbs with one of those pushing the 8 lb mark. Seems to me a lot of guys are heading out to the river down to the lakes. I heard the topwater bite is good until 8 to 9 am. My guess would be a Horny Toad or Spro Frog. Plenty of water in the system so running to any part of Santee doesn't seem to be any problem right now. The heat is crazy but at least you can pull into a stand of Cyprus trees and cool off. We are planning on running a CATT Trail out of Blacks Camp this coming Fall. We've heard from a lot of guys in the Charleston/Summerville area and looks like there will be more than enough teams to get it up and running. We'll update soon!

Shallow Water Tarpon in Charleston
Capt. Peter Brown of Saltwater Charters in Charleston says that the tarpon are in the shallow water and they are catching them on the high tide.

These tarpon migrate from Florida and start to appear in Charleston around late March, and July through October is prime time for catching big tarpon. When asked what constitutes a big tarpon, Capt. Pete says 70 pounds is small and the average runs 90-100 pounds. “The little ones just don't come up here.”

If you have ever done any saltwater fishing, then you know it starts with catching the bait. The primary bait for tarpon is menhaden. Croakers, mullet, and whitening will work, but big menhaden work best. The bait is hooked thru the mouth or across the nose on a 7/0-8/0 circle hook. Capt. Pete releases all tarpon and tries not to take them out of the water.

When fishing for tarpon, Capt. Pete likes to fish four rods, three on top and one on the bottom. The top rods have 750 spinning reels with 30 pound mono line attached to an Offsh

Charleston Harbor Redfish Action!
Sindy Orvig joined Captain Chuck Griffin of Aqua Adventures Charters leaving the Isle of Palms Marina headed for just the right spot along the Sullivan's Island beach...A cast of the 10 foot net and a multitude of Menhaden were swashing in the net. Chuck cautiously waited for the tide to get JUST RIGHT and then dropped baits down to the HUNGRY MONSTER REDS!! The Charleston Harbor is a GREAT Place to drop live bait on a circle hook for HUGE REDFISH! Pictures to show the results!
ENJOY!!

Edisto Island Fishing Report
The fishing report for Edisto Island ranges from 'fair' for trout to 'excellent' for Spanish mackerel.

The Spanish mackerel have been schooling and biting small bucktails and spoons. The fish are easy to find right now. Focus on the nearshore wrecks and at the mouths of the rivers, and watch for seagulls and other birds diving. Work your lure quickly for best results.

Sheepshead fishing is also excellent right now. Fidler crabs are the hot bait. Fish them around pilings, downed trees, or any structure that has barnacles on them.

Tarpon fishing is good, especially early in the morning. Cut blue crabs on Carolina-rigs are catching them, and big mullet are good bets too. Some anglers are having good luck while chumming, but this tends to bring the sharks in too.

Redfish are biting very good. These fish seem to be hitting everything right now. Many are being caught on fiddler crabs by anglers targeting sheepshead. Live shrimp fished under a popping cork is another excellen

One Lure Tournament
Each year the Foothills Bassmasters of Seneca holds their One Lure Tournament on Lake Hartwell. A child of one of the members will pull a lure, with hooks removed, out of a paper bag that all the anglers will be fishing. The lure for the One Lure Tournament this year was a nickel colored Heddon Super Spook.

This past weekend for the second year in a row, George Parker from Liberty, “the old man,” was the back-to-back winner. Parker won as a boater last year with a Pencil Popper and as a non-boater this year. Jarod Burgess of Liberty won as a boater.

For the eleven anglers that fished the One Lure Tournament, it was a tough day. Burgess was the only fisherman to weigh in a three fish limit. Parker had one fish and only two other anglers weighed-in fish.

The anglers argued about the best way to fish a Spook, but Parker, as a two-time winner, set us straight on fishing this topwater bait. First, the rod can vary from 6-7 feet and from a medium to a medium heavy. The reel spe

Summertime Blues
Summertime blues can test some of the hardcore fishermen with temperatures reaching in the high 90s and water temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s. Bass fish can break your will and humble your soul. But, if you want to improve your skills and learn as much as you can about this sport, staying on the water is a must. If you look at the guys who caught the most fish day-in an day-out, they have spent a lot of time on the water. I have fished competitions on some of the areas biggest tournament trails, including Jerry Rhyne, Red Man and Hawg Caller. Finishing in the top ten in yearly point standings in all trails was a result of my dedication and time spent on the water. Some of the guys that I used to fish with actually took it to a new level- Jason Quinn, Boyd Duckett, David Fritz, Gerald Swindell, and Marty Stone. These guys fish 5 days a week instead of 3 (like most avid fishermen) and look where they are now- BIG TIME PROs.

Deer On The Salt Licks
Deer on salt licks.

Deer in the Upstate are killing the salt licks. It is time to refresh last year's mineral hot holes. I personally like deer cane. You can put it out after it rains they will start digging a hole within a week. Deer cane does not last like a salt block, but it is a lot easier to carry deep in the woods to your hot spot. Try putting about a half a bag in each stand location. One of the main secrets is to put it in red clay, because it holds the mineral and when it rains it will hold water. Deer will slow down hitting salt lick in October, but the licks create very good trails. You will see deer visiting your licks the whole deer season.

Good luck Deer Hunting this season.

Weather's Hot & Water is Hot
Hot weather

Lakes in the Upstate are slow as molasses, but like all lakes when there's a tournament, somebody always seems to figure them out. Last week at Lake Bowen, it took 18 pounds to win the Thursday night tournament. Two 13 pound sacks filled 2nd and 3rd place spots. Seven pounds won big fish of the night. Most of the fish where caught on carolina rig worms off of deep points, and some caught fish on a shakey head worm. The fish seem to be suspended in the day time, and a small percentage of the bass will move up the last two hours before dark. Deep brush piles seem to work the best at night.
Lake Cooley fish are schooling early in the morning. Then they are catching them on very small weights in front of a zoom trick worm. When the sun gets high you can beat the banks and catch a few on a floating worm.

What won your last Tournament?

Lake Keowee Bass Fishing Report
Fishing for spotted bass on Lake Keowee is still very good. The bite starts before daylight, but it does not take long for it to slow down once the sun comes up. The fishing will start to pick back up late in the evening before dark.

At daylight the bass are located on the points off the main channels of the lake. These fish are hitting topwater lures like a Sammy or Zara Spook in bone or clear. Work the points and fan cast the shallow water by “walking-the-dog” out to about 3-5 feet of water.

Always be on the lookout for schooling topwater fish. They are usually not far off the points and will hit almost anything thrown at them. Throw past these schooling fish and pull through where the school was last spotted. Let them take the lure; if you strike too soon, you may miss.

Captain Chris “Fishboy” Schuber has been having good luck in the evenings off the points and around boat docks. He is fishing crankbaits like the Rapala DT06 and DT10 in bluegill and 3/16 ounce shaky head w

MegaDock Gov. Cup - Day Three
Day three of competition at the MegaDock Tournament saw very little change in the overall standings for the billfish release division, and no change in the meatfish division. BENCHMARK held on to win the title of Top Billfish Boat in the fourth leg of the S.C. Governor's Cup Series with 1600 points. REEL PASSION maintained its grip on the second place spot, releasing one sailfish on Saturday giving them 1400 points overall. Third place SECOTAN finished in third with 1200 points and did not fish on Saturday, while JABEZ surged into fourth place with 1200 points on the strength of one blue marlin release and one sailfish release on the final day of fishing. The fourteen boats that fished on Saturday experienced a slow meatfish bite and Bruce Gallup from REEL PASSION brought in a 14.2-pound dolphin. (shown here) Kara Slick captured the title of Top Lady Angler for releasing a sailfish on Thursday from ROCK'N'REEL. (shown here)

MegaDock Gov. Cup - Day Two
Day one points leader BENCHMARK stayed hot on Day Two of the MegaDock, releasing a blue marlin first thing in the morning. They tacked on 600 points to give them 1600 points, and by the end of fishing they retained their lead over the rest of the Governor's Cup fleet. REEL PASSION did not fish Day One and came out smokin' hot with a double-header on blue marlin early in the day on Friday. Owner Billy Ingraham and mate Ian Sharkey were the anglers for the two blues that hit naked ballyhoo rigged on circle hooks. REEL PASSION jumped into second place with 1200 points, and they are going fishing again Saturday, while BENCHMARK will remain in port. SECOTAN sits in third place with 1200 release points for one blue marlin and three sailfish, but they are 'fished out' and will remain in port on Saturday. Just behind them is CAN'T COMPLAIN, who fished Day One and earned 800 points for one blue marlin and one sailfish released, but did not fish Day Two and is out fishing on Saturday. Most

MegaDock Gov. Cup - Day One
The fourth leg of the South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series got underway on Thursday July 8. The 8th annual HMY-Viking MegaDock Tournament is fished out of the Charleston City Marina and 57 of 62 registered boats went fishing on Day One, with BENCHMARK returning to the docks with the points lead after releasing 5 sailfish, worth 1000 points. Owner Mullins McCloud was ready when the 'lines in' call was made over the radio and they were the first boat hooked up with a billfish. Pacu Caught in Lexington County
The South Carolina DNR has reported a red-bellied pacu was recently caught out of Gibson Pond in Lexington County. Cousins of piranha, pacu are popular aquarium fish that often outgrow their homeowners' welcome and are sometimes illegally released into public waters. Pacu are native to South American rivers, but are not native to South Carolina and are considered an invasive species and a nuisance to native fish and plants.

If you catch a non-native species like a pacu, report it to the South Carolina DNR and do not re-release the fish into South Carolina's waterways.

Record Blue Marlin
Fishing off of Charleston for Dolphin in May and landed an 850lb blue marlin. We were told that it would have been a state record if we had killed it. We released it so that another could enjoy landing a marlin.
