The decision by Santee Cooper, the South Carolina Public Service Authority, to spray aquatic herbicide on parts of Lake Marion before and during the Bassmaster Southern Open in late October may have been more of a public relations gaffe than an actual problem for fishermen.

Mark Hutson of Moncks Corner caught four bass weighing 15 pounds, seven ounces, to win the May 1 Stren Series Southeast tournament on Santee Cooper with a 3-day total of 13 bass weighing 49 pounds, 13 ounces.

Casey Ashley of Donalds went from the high of finishing second in the BASS Elite Series tournament on Alabama’s Wheeler Lake April 5 to the low of finishing far down in the field three weeks later at Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake, where he had notched his first BASS win in 2007.

A huge weather front blew through the Midlands in late October, the night before the 18th annual Tours For Tots Tournament on Lake Wateree, spewing hard winds out of the southeast. Although the day of the tournament dawned with good cloud cover, Dearal Rodgers felt the bite would be tough, and it was — for a while.

Tim Rhyne of Inman won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League’s Savannah River Division Super Tournament on Clarks Hill Lake Sept. 8 with a two-day catch of 10 bass that weighed 29 pounds, four ounces.

On the night before the final Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament of the year on New York’s Oneida Lake, Davy Hite’s wife, Natalie, told him he needed to finish no lower than 70th to guarantee a slot in the 2009 Bassmaster Classic.
