Murray will be tough on FLW pros
August 2008 Even though Lake Murray is my home lake, I’m not so sure I’d like to be on the water in the middle of this month when some of my buddies are there.
Fishing line is not created equal
July 2008 I can only imagine what it must be like to walk into a tackle shop to buy fishing line these days. There are a zillion different brands and types of line: superlines, monofilament, fluorocarbons. If I were to walk into a Wal-Mart or a Bass Pro Shops and look at that whole wall of line, I’d almost get confused, and I think I’m about as up-to-date as you can get. The average guy who walks in and sees 40 different brands and types of line can be confused. Easily.
The best bass lake? It’s Falcon!
June 2008 Back in early April, I fished what has to be one of the greatest bass fisheries in the world.
Go for a swim with a swim bait
May 2008 Every few years, a new bait or new style of bait comes along that grabs the bass-fishing world by the tail and gives it a good shake.
Add the Senko to your arsenal
April 2008 One of my favorite baits to throw in April is a Senko. I fish it a number of different ways, and I’ve learned that it can be unbeatable when you’re in a situation where some bass are post-spawn and some are spawning.
The best big-bass month? March
March 2008 Guys who are deer hunters will understand why March is such an important month for bass fishermen.
If you want to kill the biggest buck you possibly can, you need to make sure you’re in the woods a lot during the peak of the rut.
The Classic: A dream come true
February 2008 When I think of the Bassmaster Classic, the first thing that comes to mind is that anyone who has ever fished competitively at all, fished any kind of tournament, they wish they could fish the Classic just once. It’s the Super Bowl of our sport, the granddaddy of them all.
Make the most from low water
December 2007 This year has been one of the driest on record in South Carolina and across much of the Southeast, but if you’re a fisherman, you can find a silver lining in that dark cloud.
The water levels in most of our lakes have been so low that a lot of the great, shallow cover that we fish in the spring is high and dry, available for anyone to see.
It’s time for some maintenance
November 2007 Like a lot of bass fishermen, I hate to have to do maintenance on anything or do a big clean-up. It’s tough when you’re traveling and fishing almost every day for months, because when you get home, or when you have a day to rest, you don’t want to spend it cleaning your reels or working on the little things that keep your boat pristine.
Jigs are in the swim in October
October 2007 There are certainly a lot of different ways to catch bass in October, and one of my favorites is to swim a jig.
Keeping on ‘top’ of bass is a key
September 2007 September is almost a tougher month to fish than August, because bass are in transition, moving into creeks as baitfish make their fall migration.
August bass get right at night
August 2007 I can’t speak for every fisherman, but August is not a month I look forward to. It’s hot. Hot. HOT. And the fishing isn’t necessarily great.
But years ago, I figured out a way to avoid sweating too much and still get out on the water on a regular basis.
I fished at night. All night. All the time.
July mayflies hatch plenty of fun
July 2007 When the subject of fishing in July comes up, the thing that pops into my head is the mayfly hatch. You’d think something called a “mayfly” would have something to do with the month of May, but in the Carolinas, the big hatch is late June and July.
