Evin Coombes’ 17th birthday was Dec. 30, between Christmas and New Year's Day.

His best “present” came three days after Christmas and two days before his birthday, unwrapped and not under any tree. It was a huge 15-point Lexington County buck, a beast that won South Carolina Sportsman’s monthly Bag-A-Buck contest for December.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. -- After nearly six months of waiting, Japan’s Manabu Kurita is taking his place along side George Perry in the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) World Record Games Fishes book as dual holders of the All-Tackle record for largemouth bass, each weighing 22 lb 4 oz and caught 77 years apart.

The last 12 months were a whirlwind for Lorie Anderson of Aynor.

A bookkeeper at a middle school in Conway, she got a Remington 770 rifle in .243 caliber for Christmas from her husband, Will. She also went on her first deer hunt in December of 2008. Earlier this year, she bought a Leupold scope to go on the rifle. She killed her first deer, a doe in September, early in the season. Then, she killed her first buck on Nov. 9: an 8-pointer with a 17˝-inch spread that weighed 160 pounds.

Quail, rabbit hunting success remains unchanged

Quail and rabbit hunters had about the same amount of success during the 2008-2009 season as in previous years, and according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' Small Game Project, the hot spots for both species remained about the same.

As the president was attending a jobs forum in Michigan and challenging the public sector to be open and receptive to new ways to put Americans back to work, his appointees at NOAA Fisheries were posting a notice of another fishery closure that will put thousands of recreational and commercial fishermen out of work for at least six months and probably longer.

Mercury study insufficient, Wildlife Federation says
