Early-season migratory bird seasons set by SCDNR

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources has set dates for migratory bird seasons for doves, Canada geese, teal, woodcock and other migratory shore birds for 2010-2011.

The 8th annual HMY/Viking Megadock Tournament was decided after Benchmark released five sailfish on Day One and one blue marlin on Day Two, good for 1,600 release points under the S.C. Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series guidelines.

More than 80 percent of anglers participating in a June survey said they saw lethargic spotted seatrout following the extremely cold weather earlier this year, and almost the same number of anglers said the fishing success had been adversely affected by the cold snap.

General Assembly makes changes to South Carolina's night-hunting law

The night hunting law was recently changed to allow for the hunting of coyotes, armadillos and hogs at night under certain conditions, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources announced.

A few years ago, Easley’s Danny Dillard shot a big 12-point buck on a private parcel of land in Anderson County, then watched in disbelief as the buck ran headlong into a pine tree, snapping off one of its brow tines at the base.
Dillard never had the antlers scored, opting instead to have the broken tine repaired and adding it to his collection of trophy racks. But his payback came in a big way last Oct. 23, while hunting on the same 1,200-acre property.

Conservation groups take shots at proposed development

The last deployment of 32 armored personnel carriers decommissioned by the South Carolina Army National Guard was 45 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean eight miles off Port Royal Sound where they are now part of a condominium for fish.

Gun ownership protected at state and local levels, U.S. Supreme Court rules
