Joe Avin of Santee Bass Matters fishes on Lake Marion, the site of a benefit tournament scheduled for April 24. March is bustin’ out all over
March 2010
If you’re looking for a month full of exciting fishing action, you need look no further than March at Santee Cooper.

Blue catfish are among a handful of species in transition this month as spring approaches. February: transition time for several species of fish
February 2010
There’s typically a lot of change in fishing patterns taking place during February on the Santee Cooper lakes. Several species begin this month the transition from cold, winter patterns into prespawn, shallow-water migrations. For catfish, largemouth, striper and crappie, February offers good and improving fishing as the progression from the winter to spring patterns begin.

Fishing this month can provide a good mixture of fine-eating species like crappie, catfish and white perch. Striper action up, and perch perhaps
January 2010
Generally, some the biggest fishing news on the Santee Cooper lakes in January is the cold-weather fishing for blue catfish — but that’s certainly not the only fishing game on the lakes.

Joe Avin of Santee Bass Matters believes eel grass may be a key to the rebuilding of the largemouth bass fishery on Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion, but he’d love to see the return of hydrilla. Will cooperation lead to better bass in lakes?
December 2009
This past June, a concerned group of fishermen formed Santee Bass Matters, a grass-roots organization seeking answers to problems on the Santee Cooper lakes. At the forefront is their concern that the population of largemouth bass in the lakes has been vastly diminished.

November is a great month to fish for striped bass on the Santee Cooper lakes, where new regulations are hopefully helping restore the fishery to past levels. Striper fishing expected to be great this month
November 2009
November brings a lot of reasons to be excited about fishing at Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie, but right at the top of the list is striper fishing. The requirement to release all stripers has ended, and November is typically topwater schooling time. Plus, the live-bait drift fishing is excellent.

Marlin Ormseth caught this Lake Moultrie blue catfish at sunset as he got ready for some night-time action that many fishermen overlook. October ushers in fall’s best action
October 2009
October is a special time in the Santee Cooper area, as most everything worth doing in the outdoors is wide open — there aren’t enough hours to get it all done.

Guide Inky Davis said that keeping up with the movement of baitfish will keep you on top of the best bass fishing on Santee Cooper this month. Keep an eye on those baitfish. Bass will be in transition as shad, herring are moving
September 2009
September is a month of change on Marion and Moultrie, the Santee Cooper lakes. To be consistently successful, fishing techniques must change to cope with the transition from summer to fall patterns as the month progresses.

A nice channel catfish can save or make a summertime fishing trip when bass, crappie, bream, stripers or trophy catfish are not cooperating. ‘Channel’ your fishing energy in the summer’s hottest month for best results
August 2009
With hot weather bearing down, summertime fishing patterns are solidly locked into place on the Santee Cooper lakes, but if you have a good plan of action, that’s certainly not necessarily a bad thing.

Mark Bollenburg’s efforts to keep alive a 108-pound catfish he caught in early April in the Tailrace Canal below Lake Moultrie included taking it to the hatchery in St. Stephens for a swim in the fish tanks before it was moved to Bass Pro Shops aquarium i This big one didn’t get away
July 2009
There’s no doubt that catfishing is on the minds of many Santee Cooper fishermen during the summer. While there’s good fishing for largemouth, bream and crappie, much of the summertime focus is on catfish.

Catfish, like these two flatheads, take center stage on the Santee Cooper lakes in June, especially when action heats up in the late-afternoon and early-evening hours. Release stripers, keep those catfish
June 2009
June is a busy fishing month on the Santee Cooper lakes, Marion and Moultrie, and there’s excellent fishing for numerous species. Fish are settling into summertime patterns, and that often makes fishing more reliable. Plus, nocturnal fishing becomes a good option for many species.

Warming temperatures in the spring bring lots of big bass into the shallows to spawn, with April being a tremendous month to catch nice numbers and big fish. For Santee, spawn is the big ticket
April 2009
As the calendar pages turn slowly with the winds of March blowing through the trees, it’s not hard to know that spring is just around the corner.

There are numerous ways and even more numerous baits and lures on which you can catch a big, slab crappie at Santee Cooper. Time for trophy cats and slaying the slabs
March 2009
March is upon us, and some cold weather remains. But cold-weather fishing has become popular and very productive, especially for blue catfish, crappie and bass. For many years, anglers have fished the Santee Cooper lakes of Marion and Moultrie during the winter and made outstanding catfish catches. Now, they’re working to catch a variety of species.

The time spent building and sinking brushpiles during the winter to attract crappie during the spring prespawn and spawing periods is usually well worth the effort. February fishing: a labor of ‘love’
February 2009
February is one of my favorite times to fish, but I can’t think of fishing this month without thinking about how I prepared for this occasion. I usually start in December — yes, December. I make my plans as I wrap up deer season. This also helps me to think “warm” thoughts while out hunting in the “cold.”

Cold weather won’t slow down the bite, even though it may slow down all but the heartiest fishermen. Cold-weather crappie, catfish are a challege on Santee lakes
January 2009
Capt. Steve Sexton is widely known for some of his oceangoing feats, but for fishermen who frequent the Santee Cooper lakes, he is better known for the tactics he uses to catch and — and often release — catfish, crappie and bream.
