Donít forget Senkos

August is the dog days of summer, bass fishing can really get tough, and that can be frustrating. First off, you have to understand that you aren’t going to catch the big weights you did back early in the spring. I often tell people that March is my favorite month because you can catch a lot of fish, and the fish weigh as much as they’re going to all year.

Go early and go deep

Alot of bass fishermen find good reasons to stay off our lakes during the peak of the summer, with the heat and recreational boat traffic chief among them.

Get out, start cranking

Summer arrives across South Carolina this month, and when I think about June, I immediately think about starting to fish offshore in most of our lakes. I believe June is the best month to catch fish on a crankbait. Fish are schooling, and you can catch quality fish and good numbers of fish — sometimes on just one or two spots.

A great time to be on top - You canít beat May for topwater bass action

May is a great bass-fishing month around South Carolina, and it’s special to me because it’s one of my favorite times to fish a lot of topwater baits. April is an anglerís bass fishing heaven

April is probably my favorite month to fish in South Carolina, because there’s so much going on. The crappie are still biting, the bluegills are biting, the stripers will still be active, and you can catch bass most any way you want. You will have prespawn fish, spawning fish and postspawn fish on all of our lakes this month, so you can fish the way you like to and catch fish. It really would be nice to get out and turkey hunt for a couple of hours, then spend the rest of the day on the water.

Not all the lakeís a stage

March means prespawn bass fishing across South Carolina, with maybe a few fish spawning late in the month, but it’s the best prespawn month and big-fish month. And it’s not only great for big fish, but for good numbers of fish, too, because you can often find fish ganged up in staging areas.

Time to spoon-feed them - A jigging spoon is a great tool to catch bass

A lot of fishermen seem to get spring fever pretty early in the year, and this is the time it hits. Deer season has been over for a while, and everybody is raring to go, with spring on the way and tournaments getting started late in February.†

January: inventory time

January is tackle month around my home in Ninety Six. Deer season has ended, there aren’t any tournaments to fish for another month or so, and boat shows and fishing shows are getting cranked up. All that combines to make it inventory time for me and my tackle.
